E – LEARNING

Introduction to e-Learning

The use of information technology to monitor the processes and learning outcomes of each individual. Students can identify which parts of the lesson that they do not understand fully so they can repeat it. In addition to that, educators can determine the effectiveness of the process and the teaching materials that they may fix it to improve the quality of learning outcomes.
A teaching method that implements a variety of “game” forms to improve interaction, retention, and motivation of the students to continue study hard.
Unlike the face-to-face classes where the students have to follow a schedule, a process and a teaching speed that are determined by the educator, at online courses, the schedule, the process, and the teaching speed can be determined by each student according to their needs. For example, students can choose to attend classes while waiting for the congestion on the road to clear, at night after arriving at home, or on the weekends.
By using the technology of mobile learning, learners are expected to follow their lectures anywhere and anytime as long as they have a connection to the Internet. Some of the course materials can be accessed even though the students do not have any Internet connection at a certain time.

Advantages of e-Learning Program

E-learning program does not have a fixed schedule and students can follow the course wherever and whenever they want it. It is very helpful for those who plan to continue their education while working as their class schedules can be adjusted to the work schedule.
With the help of technology, the process of learning in an online course can be tailored to the abilities of each individual (personalized learning). In face-to-face lectures, some students might have difficulty following the instruction given by lecturers who are used to talking and quickly explained. This can be avoided in online courses because students can revisit the materials that are given as many times as they want until they understand completely. They can also provide questions to the lecturers via email or forums without having to feel embarrassed as if they were repeatedly asking the lecturers inside a classroom. Some other features of personalized learning is that the learning time can be adjusted, the speed of the lecturer’s speech can be arranged (slowed or accelerated), the amount of exercise or quiz questions, and the additional materials that can be provided according to the needs of each student.
>Flexible course schedules allow students to learn when they are really ready and in a good condition, which in turn will result in a better absorption and better learning achievements.
The best and leading lecturers, both from academic and industrial backgrounds, can now teach online with a schedule adapted to their activities. Students, especially those living outside the major cities in Indonesia, are now able to get quality learning from the best lecturers which previously were unavailable due to the constraints of time and location.
In offline degrees, a course may be taught by two or more lecturers with different backgrounds and experiences. This can lead to different qualities of learning for the same course. In an e-learning program, the learning processes and the digital course materials are created by the best selected professors which follow the quality standards that are recognized throughout the world. Thus, each student will receive consistent quality learning because they use the same course materials supplied by the same learning process.
Each online course will use a wide range of information technology tools, one of which is a Learning Management System (LMS). All the learning processes that occur in the LMS are recorded in a database. The data collected will be analyzed and reported to the related students and lecturers to determine the success of the learning process and improve on areas which are still non-satisfactory. For example, using the existing data, the LMS can recommend the topics in which the students need to re-visit in order to master the course that is being studied.
Online courses can save students from spending time on the road with traffic jams in order to go to class. In addition, students who live in different cities from where the university is located, does not necessary have to move to the city to continue their education as well as paying extra for accommodation and other living expenses.
